Our Sustainability Progress

At the Forefront of ESG

Underlying the growing importance of ESG principles across the world, Malaysia and its capital city Kuala Lumpur has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which is one of the region’s most ambitious sustainability targets, in line with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SGDs).

Malaysia supports the 17 UN SDGs:

National Key Enabling Policies

12th Malaysia Plan
The 12MP is the master plan charting the country’s economic development through 2025, with Advancing Sustainability as one if its three core themes.
National Investment Aspirations (NIA)
Malaysia’s forward-looking New Investment Policy centres around ESG, with key pillars to increase economic complexity, create high-value job opportunities, extend domestic linkages, develop new and existing clusters, and improve inclusivity.
Green Technology Master Plan
To create a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy.
Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap
To increase RE share in the national capacity mix and decarbonise the power generation sector.
National Energy Efficiency Action Plan
Strategic framework for enhancing energy efficiency.

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry of Malaysia (MITI) is spearheading a forward-looking growth framework that will form the basis for comprehensive reforms of Malaysia’s investment agenda, under the NIA.

As a city, Greater Kuala Lumpur is stepping up its sustainability efforts to align with the government's goals. This is in the form of strategic and high-impact foreign investment by companies that are committed to similar emission reduction pledges, resulting in a business environment of mutual collaboration around sustainability. This vibrant ecosystem is part of the reason why hundreds of leading global companies have chosen GKL as their regional hub to conduct technology-enabled and innovative activities.

Malaysia’s Recognition in ESG

  • Malaysia scored 70.4 per cent towards achieving all 17 SDGs, above the regional average score of 65.9 per cent
  • ASEAN Environmentally Sustainability Award 2021 – Shah Alam, Selangor
  • ASEAN Environmentally Sustainability Award 2017 & 2011 – Federal Territory of Putrajaya.
