Building Bridges for Innovation and Growth: Where Swiss Precision Meets Malaysia’s Potential

1. Can you provide an overview of SMCC – its mission, objectives, and key focus areas?

SMCC is a non-profit organization constituted in December 1999 to foster business relations between Switzerland and Malaysia. It assists Swiss companies in establishing themselves in Malaysia by connecting them with local Malaysian companies and individuals who have in-depth knowledge of the market. SMCC also works closely with the Swiss officials in Malaysia to promote Swiss business interests and offers platforms like functional circles to discuss current business topics such as innovation and human rights.

2. How does SMCC view the current economic prospects of both Malaysia and Switzerland, particularly in the context of global shifts?

Malaysia is an important trading and working partner for Switzerland. In recent years, and with Malaysia's focus in welcoming and attracting foreign investment, many Swiss companies have either set-up or expanded their presence here. The recent finalisation of a free trade agreement between EFTA countries and Malaysia will likely be a catalyst in boosting trade between both countries as well. Both countries believe in a rule-based trade system which maintains long-term stability.

3. In your view, what are the most promising areas of collaboration between Malaysia and Switzerland in today’s evolving economic landscape?

We believe in the strength Malaysia has as a regional hub to serve ASEAN, with world-class infrastructure and a highly adaptable workforce. Manufacturing and shared services are areas that will likely develop further. Malaysia has consistently demonstrated its ability to leverage both its strategic positioning and advantages compare to other countries in the region. Malaysia also has been strong in developing its digital landscape, with its growing datacenter infrastructure and upcoming digital talents. This is laying the perfect foundation for Malaysia’s growing digital economy. We are convinced that opportunities will arise in this area as well.

4. Can you share any successful collaborations/partnerships/case studies between Malaysian and Swiss businesses?

Over the years our members have developed a network of suppliers in Malaysia, working hand-in-hand with local companies to achieve high quality standards. This is applicable for example for high precision mechanical parts, as well as components and equipment for the semiconductor industry. Swiss companies in niche markets are increasingly looking at Malaysia as a strong base to expand their footprint. This brings together possible synergies within the scope of the National Semiconductor Strategy.

5. From your observation, which high-potential sectors in Greater KL are drawing interest from Swiss companies, especially in terms of innovation, talent access, and business ecosystem?

Shared Services is one area where many Swiss companies have chosen Malaysia to be part of their global support network. The increasing connectivity of the country, a highly educated workforce able to master multiple languages and robust infrastructures are keys to this success.

6. How does SMCC support Swiss companies exploring their business in Greater KL – Malaysia’s capital region and expanding its hub in other regions for high-value, innovation-driven industries?

Our members span across multiple sectors. Banking, manufacturing, retailing, digital experts, as well as individuals connected to Malaysia and Switzerland. While the core of our membership is based in the Greater KL area, we are happy to see the presence of Swiss companies elsewhere, such as Melaka, Johor and Penang. Existing members have always been helpful in providing guidance and advice to other Swiss companies exploring Malaysia and attracting them to their respective place beyond the capital region.

7. Are there any initiatives or programs led by SMCC to promote bilateral trade and investment between Malaysia and Switzerland?

SMCC is working jointly with trade promotion agencies such as Switzerland Global Enterprise (SG-E) as well as the Embassy of Switzerland in Malaysia to promote and raise awareness about trade activities and initiatives between both countries.

8. What key challenges do Malaysian and Swiss companies typically face when entering a new market, and how can chambers like yours help to mitigate these?

Entering a new market can be a daunting process. Our support for prospective companies includes guidance in selecting the right location, understanding administrative procedures, and securing access to skilled labour. Through our membership, we can provide direct and actionable feedback. Once established, we are also happy to assist individuals in settling down and integrating into Malaysia.

9. How does SMCC envision the future of economic relations between Malaysia and Switzerland, and what strategic role does the chamber play in shaping this future?

We envision ourselves as a pivotal enabler in strengthening economic relations between both countries. Our strategic role will continue as a facilitator, advisor, and collaborative partner, working with all stakeholders to drive mutual economic growth for the benefit of Malaysia and Switzerland.

10. Are there any upcoming events or initiatives organised by SMCC to foster networking or collaboration opportunities between Malaysian and Swiss businesses?

We actively encourage companies looking for information about trade and economic relations related to either Malaysia or Switzerland to reach out to us. Our team is committed to building the right connections to support your business needs.
Besides that, we also organise a range of events that bring together not only the Swiss community but also members of other chambers. For example, our yearly Economic Outlook event sheds light on emerging trends and opportunities for businesses, while our quarterly meetings for the HR community foster meaningful discussions on people-related topics. We also host regular events on Digital Transformation, providing valuable platforms for networking, collaborations, and knowledge sharing.

Let us facilitate your growth in the region.
