Malaysia Calls On BRICS To Stand United In Advocating A Fairer And Sustainable Economy

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 APRIL 2025: Malaysia has made a strong call for the BRICS nations to stand united in advocating for a fairer and more sustainable global economy.

During the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting at Rio de Janeiro on April 28 and 29, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan underscored the need for the Global South to play a transformative role in reshaping the global economic order.

Themed “The Role of Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism”, the meeting addressed growing geopolitical and economic challenges, particularly in light of recent unilateral tariffs imposed by the US, which have sparked calls for a stronger, more cooperative Global South alliance.

Mohamad emphasised the importance of reviving and strengthening multilateral principles, urging the BRICS bloc to lead the charge in fostering international cooperation grounded in equality, inclusivity, and mutual respect.

“In this pivotal moment of global realignment, the Global South must not only participate, but lead in shaping a just, rules-based international system that serves all nations equitably,” Mohamad said.

As the ASEAN Chair, Mohamad also proposing to enhanced ASEAN-BRICS collaboration, advocating for stronger regional economic integration, resilient supply chains and greater investment in sustainable and innovative industries.

Malaysia’s call for unity reflects a broader strategy to ensure that emerging economies have a stronger voice in global decision-making and are not sidelined by major powers acting unilaterally.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Mohamad engaged in bilateral discussions with counterparts from Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba, Nigeria, Iran, Thailand, Russia, South Africa and Uganda, exchanging views on regional and global issues of mutual concern.

The minister also attended the BRICS Brazilian Experience Reception, hosted by the Rio de Janeiro mayor.
