Malaysia, Australia Deepen Ties With New Focus on Trade, Energy And Education

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 OCTOBER 2025: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, will meet in Putrajaya today to discuss closer cooperation in trade, renewable energy, education and security as part of the 3rd Malaysia–Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting (ALM).

The visit marks Albanese’s first official trip to Malaysia since taking office in May 2022 and follows the 47th ASEAN Summit held earlier this week. Both leaders are expected to explore new areas of collaboration under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) framework established in 2021, which focuses on economic prosperity, society and technology, and regional security.

The discussions will cover strengthening trade and investment ties, renewable energy and green technology collaboration, defence cooperation, and people-to-people linkages, including in education, halal development, and youth programmes.

They will also exchange views on regional and international issues, including ASEAN centrality, the situation in the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific, and maritime cooperation.

Both leaders are scheduled to witness the signing of Memoranda of Understanding on transnational crime and basic education, as well as unveil a plaque commemorating the establishment of Monash University’s new campus in Kuala Lumpur.

Australia remains one of Malaysia’s key economic partners, with total bilateral trade reaching RM51.50 billion in 2024 and increasing to RM58.01 billion between January and September 2025. As of June this year, cumulative Australian investments in Malaysia stood at RM6.12 billion.
