For the past few years, the authorities have been laying the groundwork for creating a pedestrian network in Greater KL to improve accessibility and safety for those traveling on foot. This initiative will complement other projects currently underway in Greater KL, such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and revitalising areas surrounding the Klang River.

By 2020, over 40 kilometres of covered pedestrian and elevated walkways, which are planned for completion, which will eventually allow Greater KL-ites convenient pedestrian access to commercial and leisure sites around the region. The walkways, which will also be disabled-friendly, have been planned following the Safe City Concept, which will include the placement of security devices to keep pedestrians safe.

At the heart of Greater KL’s transformation into one of the world’s top cities is the construction of the rail-based MRT system. The first MRT line, the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line, will begin taking passengers in phases from the end of 2016, with the entire line set to be fully operational by July 2017.

The trains are expected to serve 400,000 passengers daily, with a target for 50% of all journeys in Greater KL to be made up with the MRT and residential, business and retail locations dotted along the transport line.

Set to be built on more than 70 acres of land and house Malaysia’s financial district, the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) will make up yet another landmark development in Greater KL. Located just minutes from the Petronas Twin Towers, the TRX will not only serve Malaysia’s thriving financial industry, it will also feature residential and retail space with hotel, cultural and leisure facilities.

Already blessed with lush foliage, measures have been taken to increase the green space in Greater KL, with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, the city hall, targeting to plant 100,000 large-coverage trees in and around the city centre by 2020. This will include the establishment of “pocket parks”, which will also encourage outdoor activities.

With the Greater KL city centre built around the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, it is only fitting that river cleaning and beautification have been undertaken to breathe new life into the riverside. By 2020, over 100km of riverside will be made safe for recreational use, with the authorities planning further land development and targeting increased commercial activity around the Klang-Gombak river corridor.
