Visual Arts: This is Where We Meet

OUR ArtProjects is proud to present a two-man exhibition by Lee Mok Yee and Liew Kwai Fei. Acting as an intersection between three-dimensional sculpture and two-dimensional paintings the exhibition aims to be a conversation in colour, shape and texture that also investigates ideas of space. As a purposefully formal juxtaposition, This is Where We Meet selects two artists who abstract and transform ideas on medium and material. When viewed together, their distinct approach to practice creates a unique sensory experience in the gallery.
After his successful series of paintings and installation that looked at language, Chinese identity and social politics, Liew Kwai Fei revisits his interest in colour blocks and abstracted forms to present a series of works entitled The Art of Painting. However, such simplicity is not without sophistication since Liew has been researching the possibilities of painting from both Eastern and Western art histories for many years now. Subsequently he is acutely aware of the decisions and actions made during the painting process, and continues to play with colour, shape, and paint to create a rhythmic pattern to his work.

Emerging artist Lee Mok Yee creates sculptures that also explore ideas of pattern, rhythm and geometry through more humble materials such as cork board. For This is Where We Meet he presents sculptures that are grounded in simple circles and squares, but painstakingly made up of cork that has been cut up into small pieces and rebuilt into highly textured jigsaw puzzles of rough forms. Suggesting architectonic forms and natural phenomena through an alternative form of craftsmanship, Lee shares his interests in 'the language of materials' from a physical, conceptual and cultural context.

Together both artists present reflection points on the profound qualities of simplicity when arranged with precision and thoughtfulness. Building concentrated energies to allow audiences to see the possibilities of paint and alternative sculptural materials, Lee Mok Yee and Liew Kwai Fei invite viewers to extract meaning from medium through a hypnotic trail of visual clues.
